Baggage Tips

  • Place identification tags on all baggage both inside and outside.

Holiday Baggage Guidelines

As the Christmas season approaches, Air Jamaica wishes to remind our valued passengers of our baggage regulations for the season.

Checked Baggage Allowance

Lovebird Economy Class passengers are allowed two (2) free checked pieces of baggage with a maximum weight of 50 lbs and a maximum size of 62 inches each. Lovebird Executive Class passengers are allowed are allowed three (3) checked pieces of baggage with the same maximum weight and size, except for London where the allowance is also three (3) free checked pieces, but with a maximum weight of 70 lbs each. Also on our London route, in the Deluxe Economy Class, the allowance is two (2) free checked pieces with a maximum weight of 70 lbs each.

*Bags over the size or weight allowance will incur additional fees. See Excess Baggage. The carry-on piece must be able to fit under the passenger seat or in the overhead compartment. Bags exceeding 32 kg (70 lbs) and over 62 inches in total dimensions must be shipped via cargo. Articles of baggage in excess of those allowed will be accepted for transportation only subject to the availability of space. The size limitation of your luggage is calculated by adding the total outside dimensions of each bag, that is, length + width + height. Children for whom the fare is 75% or 90% of the adult fare, will be granted free baggage allowance on the same basis as a passenger paying the adult fare. Hazardous articles such as acids, ammunition, inflammables & matches must not be carried in baggage.

Carry-On Baggage Allowance 

All passengers are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage with a maximum weight of 30 lbs and a maximum size of 45 inches, except for Toronto which is 22 lbs and London which is 13 lbs.

Carry-On baggage must be able to fit under the passenger seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment. On full flights, there is a possibility that all carry-on bags cannot be accepted in the cabin and may be removed and checked at the gate.

Additional Free Carry-On Items

The following items may be carried on free in addition to the free baggage allowance:

  • One fully collapsible invalid's wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches and/or braces or other prosthetic device for the passenger's use, provided the passenger is dependent upon them, may be carried in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.
  • One fully collapsible child's stroller or push chair.
  • A handbag, pocket book or purse that is appropriate to normal traveling dress and is not being used to carry articles that would otherwise be considered baggage.
  • An overcoat, wrap or blanket.
  • An umbrella or walking stick.
  • A small camera or a pair of binoculars.
  • A reasonable amount of reading material for the flight.
  • Infant's food for consumption in flight.
  • Infant's carrying basket.
  • One light garment bag (must not contain hard objects).

Children's Baggage Allowance

Children paying 75% or 90% of the adult fare will be granted free baggage allowance on the same basis as the passenger paying the adult fare.

Overweight Baggage

Air Jamaica continues to accept overweight baggage that is within the free allowance, weighing over 50 lbs, but not more than 70 lbs, at a charge. The overweight charge is per piece and will be accepted subject to availability of space.

Excess Baggage Charges

Passengers exceeding the free baggage allowance in the 2008 Christmas season will have the option to check-in up to three (3) extra pieces at specified charges. No excess pieces will be accepted at check-in from December 19-26, 2008 from the US to Jamaica. Passengers must note however that excess baggage will not be accommodated on their flights. Those passengers wishing to carry more than three (3) pieces of excess baggage and baggage weighing over 70 lbs must send their pieces by Air Jamaica Cargo.

The following items of sporting equipment will not be included in determining the free baggage allowance and will be assessed the charges below. The charge specified below will apply to the items of sporting equipment, whether or not it is presented as a single piece. Sporting equipment must be securely encased to avoid protrusions.

Golfing Equipment - One (1) golf bag containing no more than fourteen (14) clubs, twelve (12) balls and one (1) pair of golfing shoes.

Fishing Equipment - Two (2) rods, one (1) creel, one (1) landing net, one (1) pair of fishing boots (all properly encased) and one (1) fishing tackle box.

Shooting Equipment - One (1) rifle case containing not more than two (2) rifles (with or without scopes), 10 lbs. of ammunition, one (1) shooting mat, noise suppressors and small rifle tools; OR, two (2) shotguns, two (2) shotgun cases, not more than pistols, 10 lbs. (22 kg) of ammunition, noise suppressors, one (1) pistol telescope and small pistol tools.

Scuba Diving Equipment - One (1) empty scuba tank, one (1) scuba regulator, one (1) tank pressure gauge, knife, one (1) spear gun and one (1) safety vest.

Windsurfing Equipment - One (1) board, one (1) boom, one (1) mast not exceeding 19 inches (48 cm) and one (1) sail.

Quiver - Two (2) boards, three (3) sails, three (3) masts, three (3) booms-approximately 50 lbs (23 kg) per bag. Maximum dimensions must not exceed 154 inches (390 cm).

Pets will not be accepted for carriage on any Air Jamaica aircraft neither as checked baggage nor as Cargo.

Only seeing-eye dogs may be transported in the cabin when accompanying a passenger who is dependent on it.

Special Pieces

The following items irrespective of their actual dimensions may be considered one (1) piece and accepted in lieu of one (1) piece of checked baggage whose outside linear dimensions are 53 inches (135 cms).

  • One duffel bag, sea or B-4 bag.
  • One knapsack, backpack or rucksack.
  • One sleeping bag or bedroll.
  • Any portable musical instrument (including its container) not exceeding 39 inches (100 cms) in length.

Additional Free Carry-On Items

The following items may be carried on free in addition to the free baggage allowance:

Carriage of Strollers

Air Jamaica now provides a new service feature for passengers who are traveling with infants. The tagging of strollers will be standardized offering two (2) options to passengers - strollers that are tagged and placed with hold baggage for delivery with general checked baggage in customs claim areas or strollers that are checked at the gate and delivered at the destination on the jet-bridge or at the aircraft steps.

Air Jamaica will carry in the luggage compartment free of charge a fully collapsible stroller or pushchair for passengers traveling with infants. Only umbrella type strollers are allowed in the aircraft cabin.

Embargo Periods

No excess baggage will be accepted on the following routes during the specified periods:

  • Between JFK and Grenada/Barbados: July, August and December.
  • Between JFK and KIN/MBJ: July, August and December 15-26.
  • All routes (except London): - December 15-26.

Restricted Items

For your protection, hazardous materials including but not limited to, explosives, compressed gases, lighter fluid, flammable solids, oxidizers, car batteries, poisons, corrosives, radioactive materials, "strike anywhere" matches, loaded firearms and common household agents such as bleach, cooking oil, drain openers, cleansers, etc. are forbidden on board the aircraft in your baggage or on your person.

Liability

In the course of normal handling, luggage will show evidence of use. Air Jamaica will not accept liability for the following: Damage or loss of protruding baggage parts such as wheels, pull-straps, pockets, handles, etc., nor for minor damage resulting from normal wear and tear such as nicks, scratches, scuff marks, dents, cuts and soils.

Liability for loss, delay or damage will be limited as indicated below unless a higher valuation is declared at the time of check-in and additional charges paid. No liability will exist for valuable items (such as cash, jewelry, cameras, electronic devices and similar items) in checked or unchecked luggage or for fragile or perishable items. There is no liability for perishable items and when checked must be packed separately.

Baggage liability is covered under the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention. Where the Warsaw Convention applies, such liability is limited to US $9.07 per pound ($20 per kilogram) based on the weight of the bag. If unweighed, a maximum liability of US $634.90 exists on each piece of checked baggage. Check with Air Jamaica for additional information. Baggage covered under the Montreal Convention is reimbursed at a maximum value of 1,000 SDRs (approximately US $1,400) per bag.

Coverage for higher valuation may be acquired through the purchase of excess valuation insurance. Details are available at check-in.

All baggage irregularities including damage should be reported prior to exiting the Customs/Baggage Claim area.
